Levels (5 Levels + Global Academic Track Program to FAU)

How does the IEI work?

The IEI offers English Language instruction for Levels 1 to Level 6. Each level consists of two 8-week sessions including language instruction and cultural events. Students may enter Levels 1 - 5 at the 8-week (mid-session) point.

IEI levels match International ESL standards (the CEFR) and range from Level 1/ Beginner to Level 6/Advanced.

 

  • Progression from Levels 1-5 normally takes two 8-week sessions for each level. See sample course schedule below.
  • Successful completion of Level 6 provides entrance to the IEI’s prestigious Global Academic Track Program to FAU degree courses. See sample schedule below.

Each Fall and Spring term consists of two 8 week-sessions for Levels 1-5: 7 weeks intensive teaching and learning, 2-3 days of exams, and 1-2 days of American and international cultural activities. Full-time study consists of 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring terms, and 23 hours per week during the shorter Summer term:

Fall and Spring Terms:

  • Reading, Writing, Grammar: 12 hours per week
  • Speaking, Listening, and Pronunciation: 7 hours per week
  • Language Support Seminar: 1 hour per week
  • Additional cultural activities are held throughout the semester for IEI students.
  • 1-1 tutoring is provided by dedicated instructors throughout the academic year.

Summer Term:

The Summer program consists of one 10-week session for each level, 23 hours per week.

  • Reading, Writing, Grammar: 14 hours per week
  • Speaking, Listening, and Pronunciation: 8 hours per week
  • Language Support Seminar: 1 hour per week
  • Additional cultural activities are held throughout the semester for IEI students.
  • 1-1 tutoring is provided by dedicated instructors throughout the academic year.

Global Academic Track Program to FAU

The Global Academic Track Program mirrors the full Florida Atlantic University semester (16 weeks), 18 hours per week. Students who complete the Global Academic Track Program successfully will not be required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS for admission to FAU.

Undergraduate Students on the Global Academic Track Program study:

  1. Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Research for 12 hours per week
  2. Two additional FAU credit-bearing courses:
    a. ENC 1101 (3 college credits)
    b. One additional FAU course in your chosen major, such as:
         i. Engineering: ENG 1002 (3 college credits)
        ii. Business: GEB 2011 (3 college credits)
       iii. Other course of interest (3 college credits)

*Undergraduate students may be required to take the SAT/ACT as part of admission to FAU. No minimum score required.

Graduate students in the Global Academic Track Program are required to study:

Fall and Spring Terms:

  1. Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Research for 12 hours per week
  2. Academic Communications for 8 hours per week

Program Content:

  1. Comprehend university level lectures, discussions, and informal conversations.
  2. Read and understand university level texts.
  3. Carry out a research component with accurate citation and bibliography.
  4. Speak confidently, accurately, and fluently.
  5. Express ideas clearly and coherently in writing
  6. Identify cultural conventions of a North American university system.

 Summer Term:

  1. Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Research for 15 hours per week (10 weeks)
  2. Academic Communications 8 hours per week (Academic Communications - 6 weeks)
